SA team selected for Battlefield 3 Nations Cup tournament

Clan FiB to represent SA, will face Belgium, Russia, Finland, Portugal and Australia in pool stage

The groups have been announced for the ClanBase Nations Cup Battlefield 3 tournament.

The event kicks off on Monday 23 January 2012, and a total of 24 countries qualified to take part from the initial pool of 39.

Team South Africa will face off against some staunch competitors from Australia, Belgium, Finland, Portugal and Russia.

The group stage begins on 23 January 2012, with four groups of six teams facing off against each other. The top three in each will advance.

Team South Africa, is in Group C, competing against some staunch competition from the nation of Australia, Belgium, Finland, Portugal and Russia.

Battlefield 3

Clan FiB

Team South Africa are being represented by clan FiB, making them the official South African Battlefield 3 team, falling under the jurisdiction of Mind Sports South Africa.

FiB qualified during an online competition organised by Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) and hosted on MWEB servers, which took place on extremely short notice this past weekend (15 January 2012).

Colin Webster, MSSA President, said that while the team couldn’t be awarded Protea Colours, they have received National Federation Colours and will be an official South African team.

"Clan FiB performed very well in the competition, winning all their rounds except one against Clan ASF. We’ve got a strong set of Battlefield 3 players in Team South Africa to represent us at the Nations Cup and we wish them the best of luck,” said Webster.

"MSSA would also like to give special thanks to MWEB GameZone for hosting the competition on their Battlefield 3 servers at such short notice, after Clanbase on Friday confirmed we had two only days to enter a South African team,” said Webster.

Nations Cup Battlefield 3 tournament

Players will not be travelling for the tournament, and all games will be played online.

The match format consists of one game played on each team’s home servers.

In each match team South Africa will play a round on a locally hosted server, and then a round on a server hosted in their opponent’s home country.

Naturally, latency will be an issue with which local players will have to contend when playing on distant servers.

MWEB is supplying team SA with a TeamSpeak server, a local game server, and a server in the UK on which to practice.

Sadly, there will not be any live feeds of the event due to the fact that Battlefield 3 does not have a theatre mode. MWEB said that it is investigating other ways to stream the games live.

Desmond Kurz, MWEB online gaming manager said: "GameZone wants to help South African gamers compete on the international stage, so we will continue to work closely with MSSA to get more teams involved in the other games offered for the NationsCup. Hopefully, we can have an even bigger national representation next year.”

It's come as something of a surprise but Activision and Infinity Ward have announced that the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will have dedicated servers. This from Activision today at Gamescom 2011.

Apparently this is to show PC gamers that Activision do care about the platform, which has obviously been in question after the dedicated servers fiasco for Modern Warfare 2. Activision, however, says it's worried about cheating on the PC platform and this especially when Activision is looking at running many of its own competitive gaming competitions through its new Call of Duty Elite service.

The company does say it won't ship Modern Warfare 3 without solutions on cheating problems. It's also not clear if dedicated servers will be owned by a specific, third party company, as was the case with Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Many gamers will already know that Battlefield 3 is going to be one epic game and as the days go by the launch date comes closer into reach.

Battlefield 3 will be the next big first-person shooter and introduces many combat elements that were absent from the Bad Company series such as fighter jets, prone and huge 64 player battles on PC. In the single player, gamers will assume the roles of both Staff Sergeant Henry ‘Black’ Blackburn and Marine Sgt. Miller in the year 2014.

Most gamers will tend to focus on the multiplayer aspect of the game though because that is, after all, what Battlefield has always been about. Gamers will be thrown back into class-based gameplay with four classes. These classes are:

Assault

Assault is the run and gun class and these players will be the frontline soldiers in the game that will get involved to cause havoc in every firefight. New to the Assault class in Battlefield 3 is the addition of shock paddles to the trooper as well as the medic abilities but players will be able to gear the class to more of a medic or more of a gunner.

Engineer

The Engineer has the ability to repair and destroy vehicles with their advanced knowledge of heavy armour. The RPG’s they can use will be able to bring down armoured targets as well as cover. The Engineer is packed with carbine weapons as well and has the ability to use a flashlight to blind enemies for a short period of time.

Recon

The Recon class is still around and will provide long-range sniper play for gamers in the game. They will be able to spot enemies in a similar fashion to the same way players did in Bad Company 2 but a plethora of teamplay-oriented gadget has been introduced to the class to make them more useful.

Support

The Support class is there to provide the cover fire for the team and will make use of light machine guns to lay that fire down. Players will now be able to set up a bipod for the gun in order to improve accuracy and reduce coil. Support gunners will also be able to lay down suppressing fire while the enemy suffers when under fire as their in-game firing accuracy is lowered.

Battlefield 3 will be using DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine and will deliver some amazing graphics as well as hardcore destruction. Battlefield 3 also uses a new character animation technology called ANT which is used in EA Sports games such as FIFA and will be used to create a more realistic soldier. Characters will be able to smoothly transition into cover, turn their heads before their bodies as well as drag fallen comrades to safety.

Battlefield 3 will be launching late in October with the beta set to go live sometime in September. Gamers will be able to enjoy it on PC which is the lead platform for the game, but also experience it on PlayStation 3 and Xbox.

LemmingSA Yes tank supremacy on all maps will be advantageous, should also consider using humvee / vodnik as cover vehicle when spawning initially. Smaller vehicle travels in front of our tanks and draws fire to allow tank getting first salvo of shots into enemy tank. If smaller vehicle survives we can load it with c4 and take out the enemy tank thus saving our tank! Obviously only one person in sacrificial vehicle!
